Community In Fayette Co. Resists Windmill Farm
CHESTNUT RIDGE (KDKA) ―
More windmills are appearing at the tops of mountains and highlands signaling that Pennsylvania is becoming a leader in clean, renewable wind energy.
But some people aren't so happy about the towering figures and down in Fayette County, they are the subject of an ongoing battle.
Some people don't want to deal with the noise and sight of the proposed wind farm that would have 24 windmills stretching across the top of Chestnut Ridge.
The Fayette County Zoning Board agreed with neighbors and rejected the windmills but the decision was immediately appealed by the county board of commissioners.
They say the county can't afford to reject a $110 million project and a new clean industry in a region dominated by coal.
Iberdrola Renewable Energy discounts concerns the turbines will kill birds and bats and send a disrupting noise through the peaceful woods.
They are promising 100 construction jobs and a half dozen permanent jobs.
A Fayette County judge overturned the zoning board and ordered the board to reconsider the windmills application.
