On a vote of six to one, West Mifflin Borough Council approved an ordinance which would impose fines and or possible jail terms on gun owners who fail to report a lost or stolen firearm to police within 72 hours.
Other Mon Valley communities that have passed similar laws recently include Munhall, West Homestead and Clairton.
A year ago this month, the City of Pittsburgh approved similar legislation over the objections of gun advocates who argue among other things that only the state has the authority to regulate guns under terms of the 1939 Uniform Firearms Act.
Councilman Richard Olasz cast the only vote in opposition to the new local law.
"The ordinance is ridiculous, law abiding people can get up to a $1,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail and they are the law abiders not the law breakers," he said.
Kim Stolfer, who chairs a pro-gun group called Firearms Owners Against Crime, said the new West Mifflin law was a joke and the joke was on the citizens in the community.
Among those voting in favor of the new law was outgoing Councilwoman Arlene Jabbour who said the ordinance was not a cure-all, and she's not against the NRA, but she simply wanted a solution to the proliferation of guns.
