High Winds Leave Behind Damage Across Region

Weather: Current Conditions | Local Radar | Weather Map

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The high winds continue to be a problem today after bringing down treesĀ and power lines across the area.

The cold front that continues to push through the area has left behind a wind-swept mess.

KDKA Meteorologist Dennis Bowman says today will be another blustery one.

"Blustery the next couple of days, steady readings in the low 20s today – falling to 14 degrees tonight - and we'll lose the snow showers as they'll diminish as we go into the afternoon hours," said Bowman.

On Wednesday night, the winds sent some electrical wires crashing down onto a car in Garfield. The white paint of the vehicle was scorched along with the pavement.

Over in East Pittsburgh, the Red Cross is helping to provide food and shelter to two families after they had to leave their apartment building following heavy wind damage.

It happened in the 500-block of Howard Street. The building had four units and has been closed while the damage is repaired.

But the fierce winds wreaked havoc outside of Pittsburgh as well – including Lawrence and Washington counties.

They caused the roof of an abandoned building on Croton Avenue in New Castle to collapse.

A woman working next door says she dove under her desk for cover as bricks crashed down and dust filled the air.

Meanwhile, near Scenery Hill in Washington County, a resident said a large shed in his backyard was destroyed by a strong gust of wind.

He described the noise of the winds as a freight train.

"It just started blowing so hard and just the roar that [came] out of there. Then, the whole house shook," said Rich Egnosak. "I was inside there and I was ready to go because I didn't know what was going on. The walls everything just started vibrating."
