Veterans Attend Job Fair In Oakland

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Local veterans and service members in search of employment are finding some help today at a job fair in Oakland.

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and Veterans Benefits Administration are hosting today's employment expo at Soldiers and Sailors Museum.

"I'm really looking for anything," said Iraq War veteran Gerald Neth. "I'm just down here trying to find a job to be able to support my family."

According to the Veterans Association, there are about 70 or companies at the fair including the Secret Service, the State of Pennsylvania, many private sector companies and West Virginia University.

"A veteran brings job skills; they are a ready-made work force," said WVU's Trish Gyurhe. "We respect the fact that they have had some of the best training possible."

Networking is what finding a job is all about and what may seem like just another job fair to some people - is a blessing for someone who is making what can be a difficult transition.

"This is great. This is a great opportunity for us to, you know, get employment - get our foot in the door some way - just to meet people and get out there," said Mike Murrman, an Iraq War veteran.

The job fair continues through 3:30 p.m. today.
