Pittsburgh Honors Veterans With Parade
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
A parade is being held in downtown Pittsburgh today to mark Veterans Day.
This year's parade will be the 90th celebration of the holiday and will start at 10:30 a.m. near Mellon Arena.
According to a press release, the parade route is as follows:
- Centre Avenue to Sixth Avenue
- Left on Sixth Avenue to Fifth Avenue
- Left onto Wood St
- Right onto Blvd of Allies
The parade will be lead by Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Motorcycle Officer Robert Zollars. His 14-year-old son Zachery will ride in a sidecar alongside for the parade.
Zollars recently returned to Pittsburgh after a 14-month tour of duty in Iraq with the 56th Stryker Brigade.
According to a press release from the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Zollars has been on the force for 17 years and re-enlisted in the military last year to serve the United States in Iraq.
As with any parade, there are some street closures that motorists should be aware of that started at 9:30 a.m.
- Centre and Crawford (Block Centre Avenue both inbound and outbound)
- Centre and Lemieux
- Centre and Washington Pl. (Block Centre Avenue both inbound and outbound)
- Bedford and Crawford
- Bedford and Lemieux
- Webster and Mercer
- Wylie at Apt. driveway before Protectory
In addition to road closures, there will be office and service closures today.
- All Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, State and Federal offices and courts will be closed.
- Post offices will also be closed and there will be no regular mail delivery.
- Garbage pick up will continue as normal.
- The Port Authority is operating on a normal bus and trolley weekday schedule.
