Officials Meet To Discuss UPMC Braddock's Future
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
UPMC officials are unlikely to change their minds about closing the hospital in Braddock, according to local officials.
UPMC CEO and President Jeffrey Romoff held an emergency meeting Monday morning with county executive Dan Onorato and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman.
Congressman Mike Doyle and Pa. Sen. Sean Logan were also in attendance at the meeting.
Onorato said he had hoped they could persuade UPMC officials to reconsider.
"I don't think UPMC has changed their mind as it relates to Braddock," Onorato said. "We all collectively made our arguments of, 'Is there any way that we can look at a different way to solve some of their financial issues as it relates to that building without closing it?' and I don't see any changes at this point."
The alternative for people in Braddock seeking health care is UPMC McKeesport and the political leaders say they got some assurances on its future.
"They said as of today they're still strongly committed to McKeesport," U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle said.
UPMC says the average daily hospital population for the year at UPMC Braddock was 51 and that over the weekend, the number was 31.
The hospital employs more than 600 people and sees thousands of patients each year, but it is scheduled to close at the end of January.
