Local Unemployed Keep Hope Alive

FOREST HILLS (KDKA) ― In any given crowd, on any given day it's likely that one or more people is pounding the pavement looking for that illusive job, especially now.

Behind the unemployment figures are people trying to keep body and soul together.

Bridget Davis of Swissvale lost her job as a hospital secretary last month.

"I have a son, teenage son, car payment, bills," she said.

Married and retired, 68-year-old Tom Locke, of Wilmerding, still needs to work.

An electronics technician, he got his pink slip last Friday.

"They were given a directive to get rid of a certain amount of people and I happened to be one of them," Locke said.

"And they say there's jobs posted, and you apply for them, you go on interviews and I'm still here," Davis said.

At CareerLink East, the number of unemployed seeking help has increased 35 percent since November.

"It's a little shocking and I'm a little bit more depressed than I thought I would be," Locke says of losing his job.

"I take it day by day - I pray day by day," Davis said.

But neither Locke nor Davis has given up.

"I'm looking forward to my next job. I have to keep a positive attitude. I'm looking forward to my next job and it's not going to be long," Locke said.

"God makes me hopeful. That's it. It has to happen - right? That's all I say. I have to get a job," Davis said.
