State police are calling a fallen trooper a hero.
Trooper Paul Richey was killed when he responded to a domestic call at a home in Cranberry, Venango County.
He was a husband to Carrie and a father to his children, nine-year-old Connor and six-year-old Catherine.
The news of his death hit the people at his church, Christ United Methodist Church in Franklin, hard.
"There are no words for what's happened today," Rev. David Janz, pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, said. "They are the ideal family. They are just wonderfully loving to each other. They are great parts of this congregation very involved in children's ministry."
Janz spent the day consoling the family. The road outside the family's home was filled with cars of friends and relatives.
"In moments like this, this is just being there, let people cry on your shoulder, you come alongside them when they look like they're a little alone and you just let Carrie and the family know that you're there," Janz said.
Sandy Mays is the trooper's neighbor. She's known the family all of her life.
"Carrie's living my fear now," she said.
Last summer while her husband was overseas, she shared something with Carrie.
"I told her that I think of her a lot when my husband was in Iraq because she sends her husband off to a war everyday and I had to worry about mine being at war for only a year and then it was done, but she had a lifetime of sending him off to war," she explained.
