Heated Testimony In Second Day Of Wecht Trial

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Testimony continues today in the federal trial of former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht.

KDKA's Harold Hayes reports things got heated in the courtroom today.

A prosecution witness who pointed the finger at Wecht, had to answer questions today about whether he should be charged with using the coroner's office for personal gain.

Former Deputy Coroner Dr. Edward Strimlan testified Monday that he routinely ran errands for Wecht and his family on county time but under cross examination he admitted he was part owner of a t-shirt business operated out of the coroner's office.

The business made shirts with the coroner emblem and other patterns as well.

Under cross examination, it was revealed that Dr. Strimlan made $32,000 in addition to his medical examiner's salary by working for Carlow, Point Park and the University of Pittsburgh.

The defense attorney asked him if he ever used county resources in furtherance of his outside work.

Dr. Strimlan replied: "I probably faxed something to Point Park, I don't remember every phone call I made or every facility I utilized."

With regard to the t-shirts, Dr. Strimlan was asked "When did you know longer own the t-shirt business? After Wecht was indicted?"

He replied, "Yes, sir."

Dr. Strimlan was the first prosecution witness and cross examination of him is expected to continue into the afternoon.
