Transformer Explodes In Wilkins Township

WILKINS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― Crews are performing environmental testing at a local store after a transformer exploded this afternoon.

According to authorities, a 26,000 volt transformer blew in front of Penn Center Building One in Wilkins Township. At this point, that is the only building without power.

All other buildings in the area had power restored within an hour of the incident.

Witnesses said they saw a 20-foot fireball erupt when it happened.

Officials say they are doing the environmental testing to determine whether the transformer left behind any harmful effects.
