Train Accident In Monaca Under Investigation

MONACA (KDKA) ― Police are investigating after a freight train slammed into a pick-up truck late Thursday night killing one man and injuring another in Beaver County.

Officials say the driver of the truck, Jayson Hatton, 38, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian for treatment after the accident at 14th Street in Monaca.

Authorities say a passenger, identified as 29-year-old Jesse Kownacki, was thrown from the vehicle in the impact and was killed.

Meanwhile, witnesses tell us that the crossing gates were down and the train whistle was blowing when the driver tried to beat the train to the crossing.

"I saw the lights and the rail things go down, and I heard a horn blowing and the truck came around the rail things and the train just got the whole back of it," said Frances Curtis, witness. "I just saw sparks everywhere and I just started screaming, 'Oh my God, he hit it, he hit it.'

"Those gates are there for a reason and the reason is to assure people that in fact when they come down they are to stop and not try to cross through the gates and make it to the other side to beat the train," said Chief William Petures, of the Monaca Police Department.

Also, officials are not releasing the condition of the hospitalized driver.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
