Crews Work To Clean Up Train Derailment

SOUTH HUNTINGDON TWP. (KDKA) ― Crews are still on the scene of a train derailment in Westmoreland County.

Twenty-two rail cars jumped the tracks when two CSX freight trains collided Sunday morning in South Huntingdon Township near West Newton.

Crews expect one set of tracks to be open later today.

Emergency crews were working earlier to prevent a paint additive in one car from leaking into a nearby stream that feeds into the Youghiogheny River.

Officials say a CSX Corp. train traveling west from New Castle to Chicago jumped the track and sent about 10 cars off the rails.

A second CSX train heading east then crashed into at least one of the derailed cars.

According to authorities, the train was heading from Ohio to Maryland.

The impact derailed about 12 cars from the eastbound train.
