Three Rostraver Homes Evacuated Due To Subsidence

ROSTRAVER TWP. (KDKA) ― One family says new sewer lines put in by Rostraver Township three months ago set off a chain of events that cracked their home open.

Ninfa and Jules Massey knew they lived overtop of an old mine, so they bought federal mine subsidence insurance.

But didn't need it until this past weekend when a crater appeared at their home.

That crater is six inches wide and at least 30 feet deep.

The Massey home's foundation dropped a foot and an addition is leaning off the back of the house.

"We know who's responsible here," said Jules Massey, Jr. "Thirty-seven years of living here and not a crack in that foundation and all of a sudden they come in and put their sewer lines, tear into the hillside."

The Massey family and some neighbors were all evacuated.

DEP engineers hope pumping a concrete-like mix underneath will stop the slide.

The Rostraver Township engineer doesn't believe the sewer line project caused the problem.
