Local Elderly Woman Rescued After Fall From Bed

SOUTH SIDE SLOPES (KDKA) ― A woman in Pittsburgh's South Side Slopes neighborhood was rescued after being trapped inside her home for five days.

Florence Dziekonski, 88, was found alive Sunday five days after falling off her bed and being trapped on the bedroom floor.

Florence's godson, who regularly checks on her each Sunday, found her inside her Gregory Street home.

"Her mailbox was all full – she hadn't gotten her mail," Pat Wilheim, a neighbor, said.

Don Grant, from the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging, says seniors can sign up for a letter carrier alert program.

"If the mail is building up or piling up, the postal carrier sees the mail piling up and if they know that this individual's in the system, then they call their supervisor and the supervisor will call up the Allegheny County Department of Human Services," Grant explained.

The department also says senior centers provide another resource where daily safety needs are being met.

"Adult daycare, for example, you have somebody going there everyday so that could help even with someone checking on them, come to the adult daycare," Grant said.

For aging-related services like the SeniorLine, which connects senior citizens with such services as care management, home health, activities and more, contact the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging at 412-350-5460 or click here to access the agency online.
