Thousands Waiting For Electricity Service Cope

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Electric companies continue to make progress as they restore service to area homes following the recent snowstorm.

Allegheny Power reports that about 16,000 homes are still without service and Duquesne Light has 160 customers still waiting for power.

Some families have been living without power for days now and their patience is growing thin.

"First day was a little bit fun, now it's a pain in the butt," Ray Jenco, of Lincoln Boro, said. "It's not fun anymore. It's just a bit of a struggle."

Beth Clark, also of Lincoln Boro, has been boiling water on the stove to try and keep warm.

Clark, her husband and dog have been keeping warm under extra blankets.

She has also been checking on her mother who lives across town and doesn't have any heat.

Crews have had a hard time getting to wooded areas where power lines have fallen.

"It was very scary Friday night. It sounded like gunshots going off," Karen Kadar, also of Lincoln Boro, said. "All you could hear were the trees breaking from the weight of the snow and falling all around you."

The power company has brought in 900 contractors to help get people back on line.

"We're going to continue to work 16-hour shifts around the clock," Doug Colafella, a spokesperson for Allegheny Power, said. "We have literally thousands of people working out there."

Meantime, neighbors have been sticking together, helping to shovel each other's driveways and checking on one another.
