Clock Ticking Down For Statewide Smoking Ban

HARRISBURG (AP) ― The clock is ticking down on Pennsylvania smokers who want to light up in bars, restaurants and other public places.

The state Legislature approved a statewide smoking ban in June. It goes into effect in less than two weeks, 90 days after Gov. Ed Rendell signed it.

The ban applies to most private businesses and says public spaces also must be smoke-free. It also includes complicated exemptions that some say will create headaches for business owners.

The bill bans cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking in restaurants, office buildings, schools, sports arenas, theaters and bus and train stations.

It allows smoking in some bars and taverns, portions of casino floors, private clubs and elsewhere.
