The Allegheny County Health Department is offering free smoke detectors to residents of 17 local communities.
The number of fires in those communities far exceeds the county-wide average.
The priority areas include Braddock, Collier, Duquesne, Etna, Forward, Homestead, McKeesport, North Braddock, Versailles, Wilkinsburg and the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Allentown, Beltzhoover, Carrick, Hazelwood, Homewood, Lincoln-Lemington and Perry South.
The county is offering free installation and fire safety education with the smoke detectors.
If you need a smoke detector, call the county health department at
412-247-7800.
The program is funded by the state.
KDKA's David Hall reports the free smoke detectors may also be available county-wide for low income or elderly residents as well.
