Growing Sink Hole Threatens To Swallow Restaurant
EAST ROCHESTER (KDKA) ―
A large, growing sink hole has officials in East Rochester concerned for public safety as it inches closer and closer to swallowing up a local restaurant.
The problem is located in the parking lot of the Evergreen Restaurant.
Officials say the sink hole started forming about six to eight weeks ago and since then it has opened to approximately 60 feet wide to 30 feet deep.
The hole has gotten so deep that the foundation of the building is now showing and the walls are beginning to crack.
East Rochester officials have now closed the restaurant down and shut off the gas for safety reasons.
Now other businesses around the sink hole, including a Pizza Hut, Get Go and a Hollywood Video, have brought in a survey crew to find out if the soil around their buildings is solid.
Officials say they are examining a broken storm drain pipe as the cause of the mess.
Meanwhile, the damage to the restaurant could run into hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix, not counting the lost business.
