Man Shot & Killed On The North Side
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Police continue to investigate after a man was shot and killed this morning in the middle of a street on the city's North Side.
According to police, 19-year-old Robert Morefield was shot just before noon today along Rhine Street in the Spring Hill section of the North Side.
Officials say he had been visiting his girlfriend, who is expecting a child, and was outside of the Three Rivers Manor when he was shot.
"He was just a really nice person. I knew him for awhile, just a really nice guy," one neighbor told KDKA. "He didn't bother nobody, he minded his own business. This is crazy. I don't understand."
Authorities say Morefield was talking on his cell phone and walking towards a red rental car, when the shooting happened.
Neighbors say they believe he was targeted because he appeared to have money and was the victim of a robbery attempt.
"He was a target. That's all," said another neighbor. "You know how you're at the wrong place at the wrong time. That's all.
Witnesses say Morefield tried to run back into the building and get help, but by the time paramedics arrived he was in very critical condition. He was taken away in an ambulance and died a short time later.
Police say they believe the shooter may have been staying in a building just around the block. They spoke with a resident on the phone and investigated her apartment there, but found nothing, officials added.
In the meantime, police are continuing to investigate.
