Crashes Reported Across Area Due To Icy Conditions

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― This morning's cooler temperatures made for a slick commute on local roads.

Accidents were reported across the area.

Police say two vehicles hit an icy patch in the inbound HOV lane near the Venture Street exit.

It happened around 6 a.m. One of the cars reportedly hit a median, but no injuries were reported.

Officials say state police shut down the HOV lane for a time this morning until a salt truck could get there to take care of the roadway.

Also, Interstate 80 eastbound was also closed this morning between Sharon and Mercer.

According to reports, two tractor-trailers hit an icy patch.

There were reports as well of an accident on Route 60 near the Hopewell interchange due to icy conditions.

And along Ivory Avenue, icy conditions caused an SUV to flip onto its side. The woman driving the vehicle was not hurt.

PennDOT says now that the weather is getting cooler it's important to plan ahead and be more cautious.

"Plan your trip accordingly. If you see the night before or that morning that the conditions are going to be possibly hazardous or there may be a chance of precipitation, allow yourself a little bit of extra time," says PennDOT spokesperson Jim Struzzi.

"People really need to be cautious and be prepared because winter is coming," added Struzzi. "When you have night's like this and the temperature drops at or near freezing or below freezing, and then you have a nice sunshine day like this and wet roadways then the conditions are conducive for black ice."
