PennDOT Crews Gear Up For More Snow

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The snow removal from this weekend's massive storm has not ended yet and PennDOT crews are already preparing for round two.

The storm was a particularly troublesome one because it required so much plowing. However, most people don't realize the plows on the front of the trucks wear out.

They can do about 12 hours of plowing, and then they have to be replaced. Fortunately, the interstates were kept up pretty well with the exception of the ramps.

To prepare for today's storm, one crew is still out working on the road and they have to get the next crew ready to fight the storm.

"We have our mechanics and things taking trucks in on an interval basis. It's not like you pull the all trucks off the road to do those changes. You rotate them through on shifts while other crews are still working on the roads. We still have roads closed because of downed power lines and trees. So, certainly all areas in all places aren't open yet, and that's a challenge," PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna said.

One of the biggest challenges they are facing is that the amount of snow already on the roads is so much right now that when they get more, there's no place to put it.

As a result, they have trucks out right now that are actually plowing the snow they already plowed further off of the road to try and make room for the new snow.

However, PennDOT acknowledged that the ramps getting on and off of the parkways are not in the best of shape and the word of caution is, if you are exiting off an interstate, you need to slow down.
