PennDOT Planning 2010 Construction Projects

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― There are just about two weeks left in 2009, but PennDOT is already looking forward to next year with some major construction projects in the works.

It has been about a month since the last call at Lambros Lounge. The bar and the parking lot are soon to make way for a newly expanded Route 28.

However, it isn't the only project PennDOT has up its sleeve for 2010.

"We're trying to address all of the major arteries in the Pittsburgh area, and we've made some dramatic improvements on every route into and out of the downtown area," Jim Struzzi said.

However, no road will see more of a change than Route 28.

Between starting that major expansion project, moving the railroad tracks on one side of Route 28, clearing the old homes on the other and finishing the Etna bypass work, Route 28 will likely be the epicenter of some serious traffic troubles with one lane northbound, and two lanes southbound.

In addition, the 31st Street Bridge could be closed for about a month at some point during the summer.

There are dozens of projects, both big and small and two parkways are on the list.

Those projects will be the final phase of work along the outbound Parkway East near the turnpike and bridge work on the Parkway West around the Carnegie Interchange.

"As you know, the incident we had with the Birmingham Bridge, the rocker bearings, we changed the way we inspect the rocker bearings and we've determined those need to be replaced," Struzzi said.

In addition, other major projects include resurfacing on West Liberty Avenue, to continue some major work on the Fort Duquesne Bridge, and to reconfigure ramps near the I-79 Neville Island Bridge.
