Pens Trim Roster, Sign Skoula

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Martin Skoula on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Pittsburgh Penguins cut their roster down to 21 active players on Wednesday and signed a veteran defenseman to help shore up the blue line.
Five players were placed on waivers that the Pens are hoping to assign to Wilkes-Barre Scranton of the American Hockey League. Those players are: Chris Conner, Ryan Bayda, Paul Bissonnette, Deryk Engelland and Nate Guenin.
General Manager Ray Shero also announced the signing of nine-year veteran defenseman Martin Skoula.
Skoula, 29, has spent time with the Colorado Avalanche, Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars. Most recently he was with the Minnesota Wild.
During his time in Colorado, he celebrated a Stanley Cup championship of his own in 2001.
The Avalanche came back from a similar 3-2 series deficit against the New Jersey Devils to win the Stanley Cup in Game 7 by a score of 3-1.
Skoula has played in over 700 NHL games and has recorded 41 goals and 144 assists in his career.
With Skoula in the mix, the Penguins now have 24 players on the roster. Max Talbot, Mark Letestu and Ben Lovejoy are all on injured reserve.
A 23-man roster must be submitted to the NHL by 3 p.m. Wednesday.
