The Penguins three game winning streak came to an end Friday afternoon as they lost to the New York Islanders 3-2.
Leading 2-1 late in the second period, the Pens failed to score during a nearly five minute power play opportunity, including a 55 second 5-on-3 chance.
The Islanders opened the scoring in the first period.
The Islanders' Mark Streit helped generate the goal with a spin move at the left point before firing a hard shot.
Pens' goalie Brent Johnson made the initial pad save before an open Josh Bailey slammed home the rebound.
But the Penguins tied it up almost seven minutes later when Evgeni Malkin moved past Bailey and fired a sweeping backhand from the low right circle with 2:38 left in the period.
Islanders' goalie Dwayne Roloson skated deep in his net to cut off the angle, but Malkin's shot still squeezed in for his seventh goal.
The Pens took a 2-1 lead 7:12 into the second period off a rebound goal by Matt Cooke.
Roloson made a right pad save on Jordan Staal's top-of-the-circle wrist shot before Cooke skated past Streit and tapped-in the second chance for his fifth goal.
The Islanders killed off the long 5-on-3 chance after Andy Sutton was called for a high-sticking double-minor at 14:24. The Pens power play unit has converted just 4 of 55 chances over the last 14 games.
Then, the Islanders tied it at 2-2 in the third when Sean Bergenheim's left circle wrist shot beat Johnson on the glove-side.
The Islanders took the lead for good when rookie star John Tavares scored on a rebound with 6:12 left in the third period. It was Tavares' first career game-winning goal.
The Pens now return home for a game against the New York Rangers Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.
