Family Of Boy Emotional After Police Chase

(KDKA) The father of an 11-year-old boy who allegedly stole a car and led troopers on a high-speed chase through Washington County is now speaking out over great concern for his son.

"When I saw him in the police car, he said, 'Dad, I was just trying to come home.' That's all he said to me," the boy's father told KDKA.

That was the explanation the father of the boy said he got after his son allegedly stole his foster mother's car and led police on a high-speed chase. The man is not being identified to protect his son's identity.

"He was scared. He's bipolar. He's not thinking. When he took the car, he was not thinking," the boy's father explained. "When you get a kid bipolar, he has problems. You can't always think he's going to be perfect."

He says his son has had problems since he was 3-years-old. The family says he has been diagnosed as biopolar, ADHD and a list of other issues.

"Take him to doctors, had him hospitalized," said his father. "Nobody can find an answer for him."

After a recent incident the family wanted to keep private, they said they turned to Children and Youth Services hoping an experienced foster home might help.

"He needs mental help. He needs therapy," said the boy's stepmother. "You know, he needs something else other than just throwing medicine at him, and we figured, you know, maybe CYS could help us."

But now they say they feel that CYS let them down and claim the foster mom the boy was placed with was not experienced at all.

"They never told us that they just now got their license to take foster kids," added the boy's father.

After the car and their son were both reported missing, they say they frantically searched for him, and now they get emotional when they think of what could have happened with an 11-year-old behind the wheel, allegedly driving more than 80 miles an hour on Interstate 70.

"I love him more than anything in this world," said his father. "I just don't know what to do now."

The boy is now charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and eluding police as well as 27 traffic violations.

KDKA's David Highfield reports that he was unable tonight to talk to the foster mom in the case, and Washington County CYS said they have no comment.
