Trial Begins In Deli Clerk Murder Case

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The trial began today for a teenager accused of killing a local deli clerk.

Jamal Mouzaffar, originally from Syria, was an amputee who was in this country hoping for an artificial limb.

He helped out his uncle behind the counter at the A&E Deli in Mt. Oliver, but at 8:56 a.m. August 26, 2007, his life was about to end.

Police say then-16-year-old Erick Hancock, originally from North Carolina, with a mask, hood and gun entered the store just after it opened demanding money of Mouzaffar.

A surveillance video shows he terrorized the store clerk for three minutes then shot him in the chest even while his hands were up. The video also shows Hancock looking for more cash and cigarettes and trying to figure out how to open the lottery box as Mouzaffar was on the ground dying.

It wasn't until a full five minutes after the shooting that Hancock left the store. A few minutes later Danny Washington, a regular customer, discovered the body. He said Mouzaffar did not deserve to die like that.
