Police Investigate Yough River Drowning

PORT VUE (KDKA) ― A local teenager drowned at a popular swimming spot in the Youghiogheny River near Port Vue.

August Berg, 13, recently moved to the area and was playing in an area known as Birdy's Landing with an 11-year-old girl.

He drowned shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday.

"A man was on a boat by himself and he saw a girl yelling to him and stating she needed help," White Oak Police Chief Joe Hoffman said.

The man picked up the girl.

"She stated that she was there with a boy who was 13 years old who was in the water. And she was there with the boy a few minutes before that and that he was standing there and a wave – possibly from another boat – came in and was high on him and he yelled to the girl that he needed assistance.

"And she grabbed onto him to try to hold him but she was not able to hold him and she said that he slipped under the water," Hoffman said.

Crews recovered Berg's body overnight.
