Lab Technician Out Of Hospital After Monkey Bite

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― Officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture are investigating after a monkey at a research lab attacked the hand of a laboratory technician from the University of Pittsburgh.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 51-year-old Patricia Boyle had bones, tendons and nerves damaged in the incident that happened last month on Sept. 24.

The macaque monkey reportedly weighs about 18 pounds.

Officials say Boyle has undergone blood tests, but they have not shown the viruses that the monkey could have. The PG reports that it was being used in research on tuberculosis.

On Thursday, Boyle was released form UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

The University says it is investigating a workplace injury, but isn't commenting beyond that.
