Sixth Anniversary Of Flight 93 Crash Observed

SHANKSVILLE (KDKA) ― For many in western Pennsylvania, one of the most familiar memories of 9/11 is the crash of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Somerset County.

Today, victims of that crash were honored in a ceremony that began at 9:55 a.m. -- the exact moment of impact when flight 93 crashed into the ground.

For each victim's name, a bell tolled during a solemn remembrance of the flight 93 victims.

KDKA's Sonni Abatta reports the first stir of life at the Shanksville temporary memorial came just before dawn.

The memorial itself is a chain-link fence containing flags, articles of clothing, license plates and religious items that mourners have hung.

At the base of the fence stand 40 wreaths for each of the 40 victims of flight 93.

The theme of this year's remembrance ceremony is the spirit of community.

It honors Somerset residents who helped flight 93 families through their grief.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell were among those who spoke during the ceremony.

The permanent memorial is expected to be completed in 2011.
