Travelers Can Expect Airport Delays, Changes
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
If you have a flight to catch today, you'll want to allow yourself some extra time.
Long security lines can be expected at Pittsburgh International Airport – and every other airport – after the arrests of more than 20 people were arrested in a foiled terror plot at London's Heathrow Airport.
According to an intelligence official, the foiled terror plot targeted international flights that were "potentially headed to the US."
Authorities say the suspects planned to smuggle explosives disguised as common liquids, along with detonators that looked like normal electronic devices on board the planes with them and set the makeshift bombs off while the planes were in the air.
The news quickly started to cause delays across the area and the country.
"I think the TSA did a good job this morning of getting the word out to all the airports on what we had to do," explains the Gabe Monzo, manager of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe.
"It's part of our plan," Monzo adds. "We're covering our plan and so far things are OK."
Since the UK threat involved liquid chemical hidden in carry on luggage, the Transportation Safety Administration put new security measures in effect – barring all liquids, lotions and gels.
Transportation officials say the ban on liquids will remain in effect indefinitely.
In the meantime, passengers can help the security screening process go smoothly by packing lightly and cooperating with TSA personnel.
Travelers are also encouraged to arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled departure time.
"Time is the biggest thing," advises Monzo.
Now if you're feeling apprehensive about flying today, you may want to call your airline as they may waive cancellation fees based on the foiled plot.
