Light Rail Gets Green Light For North Shore

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Port Authority says it's pushing forward with plans to expand the city's light rail system to the North Shore.

Thursday, the agency's board will award the first contract for the nearly half billion dollar project which will feature a twin tunnel under the Allegheny River and three proposed stops on the North Shore.

Construction could begin in August and be complete by 2011.

The project has been on the drawing board since the late 1990s.
