Tater Mitts: Does It Really Do That?
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
If you peel a lot of potatoes, you know how time consuming it can be to remove the skins from your spuds.
But now a new product called "Tater Mitts" promises to do the same job with just a few simple rubs in just eight seconds.
So, KDKA Consumer Editor Yvonne Zanos set out to find out does it really do that?
To put our Tater Mitts to the ultimate test, we took them to Valliant's Diner on Babcock Boulevard where they go through 300 to 400 lbs. of potatoes each week.
Peter Valliant put the gloves on and we discovered the first problem -- the Tater Mitts don't work on raw potatoes.
The directions say you have to boil the potatoes for between five and six minutes before peeling.
After boiling, Peter puts on the special gloves and utilizes the rough palm area to remove the skins.
There's no question using Tater Mitts is safer than using a knife, but is it really faster?
It took Peter about 25 seconds per potato with a knife and about the same with the Tater Mitts.
Gerri Valliant tried the Tater Mitts too but didn't seem impressed.
"Still feels like more trouble than a peeler," he said.
So in the end does it really do that?
Peter gave it a thumbs up.
Gerri also gave it a thumbs up and asked whether we really needed it or not.
