Snow Leaves Roads Icy, Numerous Crashes Reported

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The snow showers on Saturday turned local roads into skating rinks causing vehicles to slip and slide and resulted in numerous accidents being reported across the area.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported, but there was lots of damage and a warning to us all that winter is here.

On Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh, four people, including a small child, were taken to the hospital after icy roads caused a crash.

And on Interstate 79 near Bridgeville, two vehicles, a quarter mile apart, flipped over after they hit a patch of ice.

"I was just going down the road going maybe 40 to 45 miles an hour, and then I started to like jack knife. I just like slid a little bit," said Sean Pondexter, of Chicago, who was out on local roads today.

Just down the highway, the driver of a pick-up truck walked away uninjured after rolling his vehicle across the interstate. He said he was glad that he was wearing a seatbelt because he didn't know it was icy.

"Didn't even see it," said Tony Adelsberger, of West View. "It just looked wet and all of a sudden I was rolling."

It was a stark reminder that winter is here and the summer driving rules no longer apply.

There was also a bad fender bender for a woman on McKnight Road, and more bad news for an SUV on Bigelow Boulevard. In McKeesport, a pick-up truck slammed into a hillside.

Pittsburgh's Director of Public Works Guy Costa said the ice came before road crews could do anything about it.

"The snow came down, the cars drove over it, it turned into water, the water froze and turned to ice and it became a skating rink," said Costa.

All of the accident victims agree that other driver really do need to slow down in winter weather and wear a seat belt.

Meantime, PennDOT and Pittsburgh salt crews plan to be out round the clock though Sunday morning.
