Shooting Victim, Cousin Were Playing With Gun

DELAWARE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― Investigators say a 10-year-old girl who was staying with her aunt was accidentally shot in the head in Delaware Township.

She and her 15-year-old cousin were home alone and playing with a loaded .22 when the gun went off.

The woman who lives at the home arrived shortly after the shooting and found the girl unresponsive.

She didn't have phone service to call 911, so she drove the girl to UPMC Farrell, the nearest hospital which was 25 miles away.

"They were taking a lot of photos inside the house. You could see a camera flash going … off and on," Jeff Baker, a neighbor, tells KDKA.

As troopers gathered evidence inside the home, the child was flown to Children's Hospital and was last listed in critical condition.

The 15-year-old was questioned by State police and released.

"You'd think they'd have the guns put up somewhere – especially with kids around," Baker said.

State police aren't releasing the victim's name. There's no word if any charges will be filed.
