Port Authority crews will continue work to remove a mural from the wall of the Gateway Station in Pittsburgh Monday.
The Romare Bearden mural is being removed piece-by-piece from the concrete wall it is on.
The million dollar mural is titled "Pittsburgh Recollections" and will be reconstructed in the new Gateway Station that is being built as part of the North Shore Connector Project.
"We knew it would be somewhat of an undertaking, but we didn't expect that it would be to the degree of difficulty we've experienced here," Jerry Marinzel, project manager, said.
Under the watch of a conservation laboratory, contractors are carefully removing each tile, a painstaking process expected to take two months.
"They'll go to our facility in Oberlin, Ohio, and the concrete from the back of each tile will be removed," Marcin Pikus, conservator, said.
Each of the 780 tiles will be restored and then re-installed when the new station opens in 2011.
"We always knew we wanted to save it, but financially, it became a problem when the costs went from $250,000 to a million," Marinzel said. "Fortunately, we were able through the generosity of some local foundations to secure the rest of the money."
