Students at an elementary school and several residents in Plum Boro were evacuated to a nearby junior high school this morning after officials say a problem was discovered with a gas valve.
This afternoon, officials have now given the staff and students of the Adlai Stevenson Elementary School the all clear and they have moved back to their building.
The evacuation came just one day after a deadly house explosion on Mardi Gras Drive in Plum. A man died from injuries following that explosion and his granddaughter was injured.
The explosion leveled a home and damaged several other residences.
Adlai Stevenson Elementary School students were evacuated to the nearby Oblock Junior High School. But many parents picked their children up early after the evacuation.
"I think everybody wants to make sure that we're doing the right thing and we're going to obviously go with taking the safe course of action especially with the children," Chief Frank Monaco, of the Plum Borough Police.
Also, officials say 90 residents near the school were also evacuated from their homes to that junior high school as a precaution.
KDKA's Paul Martino reports that officials with Equitable Gas say this morning's gas leak was a problem with a valve in the woods behind the elementary school.
Meanwhile, officials with Dominion Peoples Gas, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Allegheny County Fire Marshal continue the investigation into the Wednesday's house explosion on Mardi Gras Drive.
