Monroeville Residents Return Home After Fuel Leak

MONROEVILLE (KDKA/AP) ― Dozens of residents in Monroeville are returning home after a gasoline leak forced them to spend the night at a local motel or with friends and family.

The leak was reported about 4:30 p.m. Monday in the Alpine Village area.

Allegheny County emergency management officials say an underground tank at a Sunoco store on Route 22 overflowed after it was filled.

A contractor is being called in to drain the tanks and fix a possible underground leak.

But much of the gas has evaporated and the situation continues to improve.

Nearly 60 people who live in 27 homes had to be evacuated.

Residents are advised to call 911 if they experience gasoline smells.

The spill did not affect drinking water or the sewer system.
