An unauthorized protest march in Lawrence was the starting point for demonstrations in several Pittsburgh neighborhoods.
Officials tell KDKA-TV 19 people were arrested.
On Thursday afternoon, hundreds of protestors some dressed in black and calling themselves anarchists gathered at Arsenal Park in Lawrenceville.
It was organized by the G-20 Resistance Project.
From there, the demonstrators broke into smaller groups and started to spread through neighborhoods in the eastern part of Pittsburgh, including Bloomfield where the glass front door was broken at a PNC Bank branch.
In the lower part of Lawrenceville, police in riot gear and protestors had a standoff of sorts.
They were blocked from entering the Strip District. Police used OC vapor on protestors.
"There was like tear gas and then a dumpster was kind of like pushed down the street and all the groups that were together had kind of like split and started separating and then the cops kind of blocked us off
so a bunch of people went through an alley," one protestor told KDKA-TV.
Police officers also broke into smaller groups. In one instance, officers followed a group of protestors who had turned over a dumpster and went up an alley behind Ligonier Street.
Protestors say the police are overreacting.
"I think it's shameful none of this needs to happen," a protestor told KDKA-TV. "They don't need to be firing on the citizens of this country who are trying to creatively and non-violently express themselves."
But the people of Ligonier Street applauded officers as they walked through.
