New Pittsburgh Slogan Expected For G-20 Summit
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Along the Parkway West, the gateway to Pittsburgh, world leaders will be greeted by signs welcoming them to the region.
Both County Executive Dan Onorato and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl confirmed that signage is only part of a larger branding of this region.
The leaders spoke after a tour of the Bayer Corporation to highlight green technology that helped attract the G-20 summit to Pittsburgh.
"We have a very limited opportunity here with the national and international media on us, and you all know in your industry if you can tell the same message over and over and over again you just might break through all the chatter that's out there," said Onorato.
Leaders hope to break through the chatter with a consistent slogan line and uniform visual look that leaves an impression with visitors.
With its prime location along the Parkway, Bayer has committed to take a lead.
"Bayer will be the first company to have this G-20 partnership message out to the rest of the world on our headquarter campus," noted Bryan Iams, Bayer's spokesman.
But what exactly will that message be?
"We're still in the process of crafting it, of course, working with Bayer and some of the corporations, and when we're ready to announce that and begin to install the signs we'll let you know," added Ravenstahl.
"We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves before we have something we really want to message around, and we're not quite there yet."
Over the years, the area has tried to brand itself -- City of Champions, Renaissance City, Imagine Pittsburgh.
Many slogans were forgettable. Remember "Pittsburgh. City with a Smile on its Face?"
Onorato hinted at what the new message might be.
"We were the city and the region that remade itself -- over, and over again -- to the point that national media, international media, say this is the one bright spot in this economic meltdown," he said.
So with just eight weeks to go before the G-20 summit hits Pittsburgh, companies like Bayer still have no idea what that slogan or message on the sign will be.
Nonetheless, the hope is that companies all along Parkway West will have those signs constructed by September 1st.
