Groups Vie For Piece Of G-20 Summit Action
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Pittsburgh will play host to the world's next G-20 Summit in September a fact that has many local groups clamoring to get involved.
The tittering from the White House press corps was audible in Washington last week, when Pittsburgh was chosen for the location of the world economic summit.
Shows how much they know.
The G-20 commission has confirmed our fair city as their site and everybody who's anybody is jockeying for a piece of the action on September 24 and 25.
"[There are] a lot of people throughout Pittsburgh that want to be involved that are so excited," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said.
And while the lion's share of planning will be directed from the White House, the City-County host committee just held its first meeting.
"There has been talk, although it's preliminary, about maybe a dinner that will be held or an event in one of our cultural institutions but even that's too early to confirm," Ravenstahl said.
In the Strip District, it's no doubt Primanti's Bros, which has served up its iconic "sammiches" to Presidents will welcome the world's economic leaders.
Krista Voda, of Cranberry, said you can't think "Pittsburgh" without "Primanti Bros."
"You can't come to Pittsburgh and not come to Primanti Bros.," she said. "That would be
almost a sin!"
Josh Buffo, of Weirton, West Virginia, feels the same way.
"Everybody who comes to Pittsburgh should try Primanti's at least once," he said. "If you don't, you don't get the real feel of Pittsburgh."
But the food isn't all Pittsburgh's got going for it, Heinz History Center CEO and President Andy Masich said.
Pittsburgh's commitment to new and green technology is an asset the David Lawrence Convention Center where the Summit will meet is a perfect example. And it's our town's past and present, that's putting Pittsburgh on the international map.
"The best thing that Pittsburghers can do is be themselves," Masich said. "We are a welcoming community, we love the city and I think if we just share that with the outside world well, that's the best we can do."
One group that knows exactly what they'll be doing during the Summit is the protestors.
There will be factions calling for economic and social justice, and the anti-war movement will be out in full force.
Organizers are now working on logistics for a mass mobilization here in September.
