When the G-20 arrives in Pittsburgh next week, some law enforcement agencies will be wearing state of the art protective armor.
In preparation for the summit and the eventuality of disturbances like those seen in London and Seattle, Allegheny County Sheriff Bill Mullen went top shelf in the purchase of protective equipment for his deputies.
The equipment weighs about 30 pounds and covers just about every inch of the body.
To some people, the sight of riot police clad head-to-toe in armor sends out a message of intimidation.
"You don't need to militarize the city," Albert Petrarca said. "They are trying to create a climate of fear and repression as a way of keeping the people away from downtown to protest the crimes of the G-20."
The sheriff's office says the equipment is for protection and not intimidation.
"We're not militarizing. We're just taking the necessary precautions from what's happened in the past," Mullen said.
The office also says it hopes not to have to use full riot gear next week, but it believes there are people coming with the expressed intent to disrupt the summit and they intend to be prepared.
