Local Officials To Discuss G-20 Preps

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― City and county officials are expected to discuss new details about the upcoming G-20 Summit here in Pittsburgh.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl are scheduled to hold a joint news conference this afternoon to talk about the preparations for the summit.

They are also expected to discuss suggestions made at the recent community brainstorming sessions.

With the Secret Service leading the efforts, security is obviously the top concern.

Pittsburgh police will also play a major role. Police Chief Nate Harper has said that he will need more manpower. While the department currently has about 1,000 officers, Chief Harper estimates that he'll need about 4,000 officers.

City officials say they'll do what's necessary to keep everyone safe.

"Understand that we're going to do everything in our power to make this city safe and secure and to have a good positive event that is reflected internationally in a positive way about the city of Pittsburgh," Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Mike Huss told KDKA.

The G-20 Summit will take place on September 24th and 25th.
