Worker Crushed In Plum Construction Accident

PLUM (KDKA) ― Police and OSHA officials are investigating after a worker was apparently crushed to death by a large chunk of concrete this afternoon in Plum Boro.

The accident happened just after 2 p.m. at the Longwood at Oakmont Assisted Living community, which is on the Plum-Oakmont border.

Authorities say the accident happened when a crane hit some concrete flooring, which then tumbled onto the worker who was on the floor below.

"There was an incident about 2 p.m. this afternoon," said Patricia Kornick, of Presbyterian SeniorCare. "It resulted in the death of a 29-year-old subcontractor on the project."

There are few details from the officials who run Presbyterian SeniorCare, which is an upscale retirement and assisted living village in Oakmont.

But KDKA has learned that a 29-year-old man, working for a contractor from New Jersey, was crushed to death when the crane struck some concrete.

"It was during the course of construction work that the accident occurred. It is under investigation," said Kornick.

Plum Borough police are investigating and OSHA, the Occupation Safety and Health Administration, will be on scene Friday.

But this latest incident comes as one in a series of construction accidents that have occurred in our region during the past few months.

With many construction projects underway in our region, there have been at least a half dozen construction deaths in just the past few months. Most of them were falls including an accident on the McKees Rocks Bridge project earlier this month.

The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Yamil Gonzalez. He was believed to have been living in this area temporarily.
