Accused Cop Killer's Attorney Wants Trial Moved

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Citing the amount of pre-trial publicity, the defense attorney for Richard Poplawski, the man accused of gunning down three Pittsburgh police officers last April, wants the trial moved out of Allegheny County.

In court today for a review hearing, Poplawski waived his right to a speedy trial.

During the hearing, the defense team for Poplawski reviewed some of the prosecution's evidence in the case.

The defense also asked for a change of venue.

This morning, the judge then tested a number of people in a jury pool to get a sense of how publicity may affect jury perceptions.

In the test of 81 people, only eight had not heard of the case, while 45 said they already had a fixed opinion of the outcome.

Poplawski is awaiting trial for the murders of Pittsburgh Police Officers Eric Kelly, Paul Sciullo II and Stephen Mayhle.

The officers were gunned down while responding to a domestic dispute at Poplawski's home on the morning of April 4th in Stanton Heights.
