Local Artist Creates "Fightin' 5th" Carving

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The community again today remembered Pittsburgh's three fallen police officers as a new tribute was unveiled in their memory.

Officer Eric Kelly, Officer Stephen Mayhle and Officer Paul Sciullo II were killed back in April during a shooting in Stanton Heights.

Sharon Jo Serbin, a local artist who is hearing impaired, recently donated her talents to create a memorial designed to last a lifetime.

It's a special picnic table, with a carving of the "Fightin' 5th" design, that will sit outside the Zone 5 station headquarters.

"They approached me and asked me if I wanted to carve this, and the very first feeling I felt was honored," said Serbin.

"It's a lot of support. It's very nice to see," said Officer Brett Schmidt, of the Pittsburgh Police Motorcycle Unit. "You don't get to see that very often in this job."

A retired police officer blessed the table, and then other officers held a special memorial service for the fallen heroes.
