Officers Honored As Fans Wear Fallen Heroes Shirt

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A special tribute is going on during tonight's Steelers game over at Heinz Field to remember Pittsburgh's fallen heroes.

On the morning of April 4th in Stanton Heights, three Pittsburgh police officers, Eric Kelly, Paul Sciullo II and Stephen Mayhle, were gunned down in the line of duty.

Since that time, all sorts of tributes and remembrances have taken place.

But today, on the six month anniversary of the shooting, those remembrances came to Heinz Field.

The "Fightin' 5th" fallen heroes t-shirt was designed by a fellow Pittsburgh police officer and have been sold to benefit the Fallen Heroes Fund since the shooting happened.

A new batch went on sale today, some 2,000 in all, to make sure that their sacrifices will not be forgotten.

And Steelers fans were asked to wear them to the game this evening against the San Diego Chargers.

Going into today, there have been 70,000 t-shirts sold around the world.

The line has also been expanded to include long-sleeve tees, long-sleeve sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts and soon-to-be coffee mugs and more.

It's a gesture that the father of one of the fallen officers said means a lot.

"It's something that will stick with me all my life. It makes me feel good that everybody else still remembers my son… my son Stephen," said Ron Mayhle. "There's been a lot of people that have offered their condolences."

Before kick off Sunday, most sizes were sold out, but everything will be restocked in the next few weeks and available at the website www.pittsburghfallenheroes.com.

A church in Bloomfield is also looking to honor the three officers as well. They are hoping to build a memorial that would be located in front of the church on Liberty Avenue.
