Pet Elk Shot In Fayette County

JEFFERSON TWP. (KDKA) ― Belle Vernon state police are investigating an attack on a family's pet elk in Fayette County.

Bernard and Cheryl Liptak, of Jefferson Township, say their pet elk was shot to death in its pen last week. They say just yesterday, they found another elk with a bullet wound to the leg.

The second elk appears to be alright and will be treated today by a local veterinarian.

Police have not yet made an arrest.

The Liptaks are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

They say the elk that was killed was worth about $10,000.

The Liptaks are now taking precautions with their other animals to keep this from happening again.

This most recent attack comes as state police investigate at least two other cases of cruelty to animals in Fayette County.

In the last month, three calves have been skinned alive on a farm near Smithfield. Just last week, a cat died after being shot in the head by an aluminum arrow in Connellsville.
