Voters Head To The Polls On Election Day

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Today is election day and voter turn-out is expected to be very light, but there is one race in particular that is getting a lot of attention in Pittsburgh.

In Pittsburgh, the high-profile race is for the mayoral seat. Franco "Dok" Harris voted at the Central Catholic High School, Kevin Acklin voted in Squirrel Hill and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl voted at St. Bonifice.

"This is our one voice to say every year who we would like to see representing us and we get this wonderful opportunity to do it and we need to take advantage of that," Georgiann Lucas said.

Voters took advantage of having the candidates stop at their site. Some asked extra questions before casting their vote.

"I asked [Ravenstahl] why I should vote for him. What has he done for Pittsburgh? What is one of his highest accomplishments? And he told me the Pittsburgh promise," Terri Jones Davis said.

She was able to ask her question because outside of the voting site, was mainly just the media.
Inside, the turn-out was low.

"That's very disappointing. All of us have this opportunity and we need to take advantage of this opportunity and certainly be some kind of models for our children and young people too to turn-out and not just show up when there's a presidential election," Lucas said.

Election officials predict that 30 percent will turn out for the election. Last year, around 70 percent of the registered voters made it out to the polls.

The polls will close at 8 p.m. this evening.
