Couple In Family Kidnapping Case Arraigned

PITTSBURGH (AP) ― An elderly woman and her boyfriend have been brought back from Ohio to face charges in Pittsburgh that they kidnapped the woman's 86-year-old sister.

Attorneys for 72-year-old Laura Stewart and 76-year-old Earl Cross of Shaker Heights, Ohio, say they were just trying to help 86-year-old Evelyn Poynter when they took her from her rundown Pittsburgh home on Sunday.

Police began investigating when an informant told them Poynter was carried from the home bound with duct tape.

Police acknowledge Poynter's home was in "deplorable" condition but say that didn't give Stewart and Cross a legal right to forcibly take her from Pittsburgh and drive her to their Ohio home.

Stewart and Cross were arraigned early Saturday and face a preliminary hearing Jan. 13.
