After announcing that he was buying a local radio station in October, Eddie Edwards has withdrawn his application to purchase WPYT 660 AM.
He was planning to turn the station into a news-talk station devoted to the black community.
"Harvey Adams was my dear friend as you well know and was a great friend of this community," Edwards said when he announced his intentions to purchase the station. "Harvey approached me on his dying bed and asked me to do him a favor and the favor was since nobody's coming in I had to do something."
"I talked with Eddie yesterday and he told me about the health issues he was dealing with just the stress of starting from ground zero and he knew what he was up against just trying to get the advertising revenue in," Harvey Adams III, a broadcaster, said. "And it's just health related. Hopefully my dad's dream will come true one day."
The station was to be located in Forest Hills. Sundays would have had strictly religious programming.
And while the wait continues, websites like
RadioMagicPittsburgh.com, started by a former program director at WAMO, are still trying to fill the void.
There is a locally-owned African American gospel station, WGBN, which has picked up some of the syndicated programs that used to be carried on WAMO, like "The Bev Smith Show."
Meantime, people are waiting to hear what's next.
"It's a shame that in a city of this size we don't have a radio station that addresses interests of the African American community," Carol Bracket, from the Hill District, said.
